Healthy Gums = Healthy Smile (Gum Disease Prevention)

Gum disease is one of the biggest threats to adult dental health – but it’s also highly preventable with proper care. Gum disease prevention is at the heart of what our dental hygienist does. Gum disease usually starts as mild gingivitis (inflamed, bleeding gums) and can advance to periodontitis, where the supporting bone and ligaments around teeth are damaged. You might notice symptoms like red or swollen gums, bleeding when brushing, or persistent bad breath. If left untreated, gum disease can eventually lead to loose teeth or even tooth loss.

Modern Dental Office

Why Regular Teeth Cleaning Is Important

Remove stubborn plaque and tartar safely.

Prevent gum disease before it starts.

Enjoy fresher breath with our gentle cleanings.

Maintain a healthier, brighter smile for longer.

Good oral hygiene isn’t just about a pretty smile — it’s vital for your overall health.

In short, regular professional teeth cleaning is a cornerstone of preventive dentistry. It’s far easier (and more pleasant!) to get a quick clean every six months than to deal with toothaches, bleeding gums, or emergencies later. By investing a little time in hygiene appointments, you’re investing in a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

What to Expect During Your Hygiene Appointment

If you’re wondering what happens when you come in for a dental hygiene session, here’s a quick overview of our process. We pride ourselves on making the experience friendly, informative, and comfortable for every patient. A typical direct access hygiene appointment at The Dentists of Didsbury lasts about 30 minutes and includes the following steps:

Warm Welcome & Assessment:

Your visit begins with our hygienist greeting you and reviewing your dental history or any concerns you have. Feel free to mention any specific issues like sensitive teeth or areas of bleeding gums. Our hygienist will then examine your mouth, checking your teeth and gums for signs of plaque, tartar, gum inflammation, or anything unusual.

Gentle Scaling (Plaque & Tartar Removal):

Next comes the main cleaning work. Using special ultrasonic scalers and hand instruments, our hygienist will gently remove the plaque and tartar deposits from your teeth. You’ll hear a gentle humming or feel mild vibrations as the ultrasonic scaler dislodges hardened tartar – many patients find it fascinating! We systematically clean every quadrant of your mouth, paying close attention to the gumline and between teeth.

Polishing (and AirFlow if needed with addition cost):

Once all the gritty stuff is gone, we will polish your teeth to remove minor stains and give them a nice sheen. We use a special low-abrasion polishing paste and a rotating soft cup that buffs each tooth. This feels a bit like an electric toothbrush scrubbing your teeth and usually has a pleasant minty taste. If we’ve noted or you’ve requested heavy stain removal, this is when we’ll perform the AirFlow polishing as described above.

Gum Health Advice & Q&A:

After your cleaning, our hygienist will review the findings with you and give personalized advice for maintaining your oral health. We’ll point out any areas in your mouth that might need extra attention during brushing or flossing and demonstrate proper techniques if helpful. This oral hygiene instruction is a key part of the appointment – our goal is to empower you to keep your teeth and gums healthy every day. You can also ask any questions you have (for example, about brushing gadgets, the best toothpaste or mouthwash, diet tips to reduce staining or decay, etc.).

Comfort is Key:

Many people feel anxious about dental cleanings, but our team strives to make your hygiene visit stress-free and even pleasant. We use a gentle touch and modern, minimally invasive techniques to ensure minimal discomfort. If you ever feel nervous or have sensitive areas, let us know – we have options like numbing gel, warm water rinses, or simply taking short breaks to keep you comfortable.
